Slow Jack at Malkop Summer Rock Festival

Malkop Summer Rock Festival is around the corner, and are playing host to a bunch of legendary artists, like Francois van Coke, Koos Kombuis, Mr Cat & The Jackal, and many more. You’d think that being included in a line-up that reads like the who’s who of local live music would unsettle a young band, but Slow Jack is certainly prepared.

“Live performances, that’s what we live for, yo!”

“Nothing beats the adrenaline rush and the thrill you get” they say when asked about performing live. “As a band, some of our most intimate moments happen on stage”.

Drawing inspiration from each other comes easy, with the majority of the band living together. This means that writing music together is a constant activity, with the whole band participating in the process. Slow Jack has already recorded five singles, and are planning a whole album for next year.

For now, though, playing live is what Slow Jack are focusing on, with a couple of big performances coming. River Republic on 3 December and the New Year’s Eve party in Kirstenbosch with Johnny Clegg are important shows listed, but first they are looking forward to the Malkop Summer Rock Festival from 2-4 December.

“Oh man, the West Coast is a lekker place,” they said, “now adding all of the amazing acts on top of that, it’s going to be epic. We are so stoked to be added to the line-up; it barely ever happens that you get acts as diverse as this on one stage. “

With the ball firmly in motion with some impressive dates lined up, an album in the works, and their name being heard in local music circles, Slow Jack could be excused for relaxing a little, but this hard working group has no plan to let up. They have a wish list of other artists they would want to perform with (“Definitely on top of that list it would have to be Arctic Monkeys or even the dirty boys from Sticky Fingers”) while making sure to hone their craft and perfect their live performance: “Our live show is full of colour, a paint shop full of colours actually. We try and make all our performances different, like a series of colourful paintings.”

“We definitely hear in colour too.”
